At 8 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, the first gingerbread entries are due at the Parker County Attorney Office at 101 N. Main St. Setup has to be finished by 9:30. Half an hour later, Christmas on the Square opens across Historic Downtown Weatherford, and every entry stays on display until the Square closes at 4 p.m.
That's what you'll see on the day. The entry list is set weeks earlier. The Weatherford Chamber of Commerce picked "Gingerbread Christmas" as this year's theme and is running its first annual Gingerbread Contest. Registration closes Monday, November 23, which is the start of Thanksgiving week. Entries for the Weatherford Lights the Night parade close three days earlier, on November 20. If you want your family's name or your business's float in this year's event, sign up by November 20 for the parade or November 23 for the contest.
The contest is open to families and local businesses. The Chamber suggests traditional houses, businesses, barns, churches or historic buildings as subjects. The rules are short. They're also specific enough that you should read them before you buy supplies. According to the contest entry form:
Judges score four things: creativity and originality, the Gingerbread Christmas theme, craftsmanship and detail, and presentation. Winners are announced at 2:30 p.m. If you're entering, that time anchors your afternoon.
The two divisions pay out differently. Families compete for cash. Businesses compete for a donation to a local charity they choose.
| Division | Entry fee | Prize |
|---|---|---|
| Family, 1st place | $10 | $250 |
| Family, 2nd place | $10 | $100 |
| Business | $20 | $100 charitable donation |
| People's Choice | Any entry | Trophy, bragging rights and a $50 gift card |
The business division turns a storefront's entry into a small gift to a cause the owner already supports, and it costs $20 to enter. Yellow Rose Mapping is listed as the contest's presenting sponsor.
The form names the drop-off site two ways. One summary line says "Parker County Building," and the detailed delivery instructions give the Parker County Attorney Office at 101 N. Main St. Go by the street address, and check with the Chamber if you're unsure.
The Weatherford Lights the Night parade starts at 6:30 p.m., after the Square winds down. The Chamber lists it running until 8:30 p.m. This year it runs the extended route. It starts at the Ninth Grade Center, goes down Palo Pinto Street, loops the downtown square, continues onto Waco Street and returns to the Ninth Grade Center. The Chamber promises lighted floats and vehicles, the Roo Marching Band, the Weatherford Blue Belles and Santa Claus.
Groups that want to march, drive or ride should note the parade application. It puts the registration and payment deadline at November 20, 2026, with lineup starting at 4:30 p.m. on parade day. Staging assignments and more instructions will be emailed closer to the date. Lineup starts at 4:30, half an hour after the Square closes, so anyone who works a vendor booth downtown and also rides in the parade has a tight turnaround.
Both deadlines land within a week of Thanksgiving.
| Date | What closes or happens |
|---|---|
| Friday, Nov. 20 | Parade registration and payment due |
| Monday, Nov. 23 | Gingerbread Contest registration closes |
| Thursday, Nov. 26 | Thanksgiving |
| Saturday, Dec. 5 | Contest drop-off at 8 a.m., parade lineup at 4:30 p.m. |
If your family makes gingerbread houses every year, register no later than the Monday of Thanksgiving week, then build over the holiday. Then deliver a finished piece downtown nine days after Thanksgiving.
Christmas on the Square isn't the only thing happening in Weatherford on December 5. The December First Monday Trade Days runs at Heritage Park, 317 Santa Fe Dr., from Friday, December 4, through Sunday, December 6. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and entry and parking are free. The National Vietnam War Museum at 12685 Mineral Wells Hwy. is holding Operation: Santa Drop from noon to 3 p.m. Admission is free, coffee and hot cocoa are free, there are activities for kids, and Santa is billed as arriving without his reindeer.
Santa is scheduled at both the Square and the museum that afternoon, so families will likely pick one. Here's the full day in order:
A family with a contest entry has two fixed points downtown: drop-off in the morning and the 2:30 announcement. That leaves late morning open for Trade Days, or lunch and Santa Drop if you can be back by 2:30. A family without an entry can start at Heritage Park when it opens, get to the Square by midday and keep the evening for the parade.
The Chamber's official materials don't list spectator street closures or a downtown parking plan for the parade yet. Check the Chamber's event page in the days before the fifth for updates. For questions about Trade Days, the City of Weatherford's First Monday page lists the Parks, Recreation and Special Events Department at 817-598-4359.
December doesn't end on the fifth. On Monday, December 7, the Parker County Community Choir performs Handel's Messiah at 7 p.m. at Weatherford College, 225 College Park Dr. The following Saturday, December 12, the Parker County Heritage Society runs its Candlelight Tour of Historical Homes from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If your gingerbread entry was a historic building, the tour shows you the real thing a week later.
The City of Weatherford's December 2026 calendar doesn't list a Holiday Tree Lighting yet. Last year's ceremony and drone show were at Heritage Park on November 24, 2025, and the tree and Pathway of Lights stayed up through December 31. The 2026 date and location will be on the city calendar once they're announced.
For now, the next date to plan around is the gingerbread registration deadline: Monday, November 23, with the entry form open until then.
